ROSEHIPS

Sour, tangy, crisp and refreshing; rosehips are the fruit of the rose plant. 

driedrosehipsThe garden is full of them right now although they are not ready for harvesting.  It’s definitely worth saying “well done bees and butterflies!”, since the appearance of rosehips is a sign that pollination has been successful. Rosehips range in size and color depending on the type of rose and are best harvested around first frost. They can be dried for future use or eaten raw or made into jams, jellies, syrups or even wine. I’ve found several recipes that recommend they can be used anywhere a cranberry can be used...cakes, breads, and pies.

From a health perspective, first and foremost rosehips are an amazing source of Vitamin C and Vitamin A. They also contain a variety of antioxidants; carotenoids, flavonoids, polyphenols, leucoanthocyanins and catechins, which help with things like cardiovascular disease, systemic inflammation, and insulin management. Rosehips are considered to be a good cancer preventative. Sipping a cup of rosehip tea is not only great for the skin but also boosts immune function and acts as an antiviral, antifungal and antibacterial intervention.

rosehipteaResearch demonstrates that a daily dose of rosehip can help lower blood sugar, cholesterol, and blood pressure. Studies also demonstrate that rosehips can minimize the pain and inflammation experienced during rheumatoid arthritis and also in chronic back pain. It has also shown promise in helping to decrease joint pain from osteoarthritis, in fact, several studies demonstrated better results at alleviating pain and inflammation than non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs typically used as mainstream intervention. 

Rosehips can also be made into a topical skin gel that can help skin cells repair and replenish. It is a great for helping to eliminate scarring, acne, and burns. It also helps replenish collagen and skin elasticity.

At the moment, I have only tried rosehips as tea and as jam but you as soon as harvest time comes round I will be experimenting with a wide variety of culinary adventures.
